First, a disclaimer. Unlike most foods you’ll see around here, there is nothing remotely healthy about this. It’s pure, unadulterated junk. But it tastes good. 😉 And once a year, I think I can splurge on junk. 🙂
Years ago, someone at one of our old churches made this saltine candy at Christmastime for a dinner. It was so good! I got the recipe from her, and made it on a couple of occasions. Fast-forward a number of years, through a couple of moves and a move to gluten-free eating, and I saw the recipe pop up on Pinterest. “Hmmm…I wonder if that would work with Glutino crackers.” Much to my surprise, when I went to buy crackers, I found a type of Glutino cracker our store had never carried before.
I’d never seen them. But they’re a lot more like saltines. So those are what I used. These crackers are thinner than saltines, though, so I cut back the amounts of the other ingredients, and the results were just as good as the candy I remember! Here’s the gluten-free version:

Gluten-Free "Saltine" Candy
Ingredients
- Glutino crackers I used about 10 crackers. See the picture for the type of cracker I used.
- 1-1/2 sticks butter 12 Tbsp.
- 3/4 c. brown sugar
- 1-1/2 c. semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Cover a rimmed baking sheet with foil and spread crackers on it in a single layer.
- Preheat the oven to 400.
- Combine butter and sugar in a small saucepan and boil for 3 minutes. Pour this mixture over the crackers. (It's a bit thick; I spread it around with a silicone spatula.)
- Put the whole thing in the oven for about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips. (I found that it helped if I let it sit for about a minute first, to solidify just enough that I didn't displace the syrup when I added the chocolate.)
- Let sit for 5 minutes (so the chocolate can melt), then spread the chocolate evenly with a spatula.
- Let cool completely. (This takes ages. Like...hours and hours. I finally gave up and popped it in the freezer for about 20 minutes.) Break into pieces.
What an interesting recipe! Sounds yummy for the odd splurge of junk :). I eat a vegetarian and gluten-free diet, so it’ll work for me.
We affectionately call this “Christmas Crack” & it’s even better with M&Ms / Glutino pretzel on top!
That sounds good!
