Most of the information I’ve been posting for this Getting Organized series is excerpted from a book I’ve been writing for ages and haven’t yet finished. It is, however, quite condensed so we can do (in general) one post a week. There is so much that could be said about routines that I wanted to put up another post or two with some additional notes on the specific weekly “focus days.”
Laundry Day
Most people will not be able to fit all of their laundry into one day. There are a few different ways you can handle this. Personally, I wash all of the clothing on Laundry Day and spread out other items (linens, etc.) throughout the week. If you have a very large family (and, thus, a lot of clothes), you might do it the other way around.
I also consider Laundry Day the time to do ironing, mending, cleaning in the laundry room, etc.
Some people may choose to handle clothing-related periodical tasks — such as organizing bedroom closets — on Laundry Day, as well. Whatever works for you!
Errand Day
Errand Day should, hopefully, be pretty self-explanatory. This is the day you do all of your errands — or as many of them as possible. Because of the way schedules work nowadays, it’s likely you won’t have any choice but to go out somewhere at some other point during the week. But if you can combine the library, post office, shopping, etc. all into one day, you’ll get it done more efficiently. And you should be more efficient at home the rest of the week because you won’t have to keep interrupting yourself to run to the store for a loaf of bread.
Kitchen Day
Kitchen Day is for food preparation and cleaning in the kitchen. If you’ve just purchased any bulk foods, meat that needs to be cooked and/or frozen, etc. you will definitely want to address that. You may also want to use this day for whizzing stale bread ends into bread crumbs, whipping up mixes, etc.
If you do bulk cooking, you can do that now. And if you have things you like to prepare for the whole week — baking bread, cooking up a big pot of rice, etc., this is also a good time for that.
Keep reading tomorrow for more about Cleaning Day, Office Day, and Yard/Garden Day.
