Having talked about the Government, Church, Missions, Friends, and Family (Immediate & Extended) sections of my prayer notebook, I’m talking today about the last section: Self.
Perhaps it seems selfish to have an entire section dedicated only to myself. The truth is, though, it isn’t ultimately just for me. This is a section devoted not only to physical requests, but also to confession, requests for God’s help in my spiritual growth, and prayer for me to be the wife, mama, etc. that I need to be. So it benefits those around me, as well.
You can include a picture of yourself here, if you like. I don’t find that it’s as necessary here. I do find it helpful to include some “icon”-type images of things that will help me remember to pray for certain things. For instance, a picture of a flame helps me remember to request the Holy Spirit’s help. An umbrella reminds me to recall – and be thankful for – my blessings ( “showers” of blessings). Musical notes remind me to sing praises.
PrayingScriptures.com has a list of Scriptures for “needs.” Having not used this list (yet) myself, I can’t necessarily vouch for it, but it could at least make for a helpful starting point. If you have a particular area or areas of struggle, you might also find it beneficial to print out a list of Scriptures that remind you of the truth in that area and/or remind you how to pray for that particular thing.
Of course, you can pray whatever and however you like, but sometimes having a list of suggestions is helpful to me to overcome the prayer equivalent of “writer’s block.” 🙂
