Yesterday Morning…
Yesterday was not a fun day. I’ve had so much to do lately that I was way behind, but by yesterday morning I was almost caught up. I had a mental plan in place for what to do in what order to most efficiently get caught up. And then there was a knock at the door a few minutes after I finished my quiet time (and before we’d had a chance to eat breakfast)…
The power company crew informed me that within the next fifteen minutes they would be cutting off our power for several hours. (They had to install a new line up the road for a lot someone’s preparing to build on.)
Great. So, no heat — and the house hadn’t even had a chance to warm up for the day. That limits what we can do, since we have to spend most of our time huddled under blankets.
No printer, so I couldn’t print off the form I needed to get my menu and grocery list done (so I could go out after hubby came home, since our second car is having issues and I can’t just go out on our regular errand day).
No water, so I couldn’t do any laundry.
No oven, so I couldn’t cook the pumpkin I had sitting here waiting to be cooked. I couldn’t even open the fridge to get us breakfast!
Needless to say, my plans for the day were shot.
Into the Evening…
When hubby came home (early — he ran out of the paint he needed for the job he was working on), the power had come on and we’d eaten lunch, but that was about it. I still hadn’t started anything I had on my plate for the day.
So, on to preparing the pumpkin (more about that in another post). I got the pumpkin cut up and my hands in the pumpkin “guts,” and discovered that the kitchen sink drain was clogged up. (Again. It’s only been a few months since we had a plumber out here to unclog it.)
Taking care of the pumpkin took an exceedingly long time because, not only am I unfamiliar with the process, I couldn’t wash anything — including my hands — in the kitchen. I finally got that done and got dinner together (late) and my menu and grocery list taken care of, and was about ready to get myself out the door (not in nice clothes, or even “real” clothes; just in sweats, which I rarely go out in.) when Ariel went to bed at 9:00.
But the baby had to come with me, so I needed to reinstall the carseat first. And then the baby decided she was hungry and had to eat before we left. So I fed her, bundled her up, went to put her in the carseat — and discovered that Ariel had apparently played with the seat while it was in the house and tightened the straps as small as they go.
So, standing in the cold, with a baby fussing because she was tired and really just wanted to go to bed, I fought with the straps. (They’re really easy to add “play” to, but I can never figure out how to redistribute that play so that it will go over her shoulders instead of from the sides of her legs.)
Finally, we got out of the driveway, went to Wal-Mart, and did our grocery shopping. When I got out of Wal-Mart, my key wouldn’t work in the driver’s side door lock. I came home with groceries at midnight, exhausted.
I am SO glad that yesterday is over!
