Freshly Picked provided us with the pair of moccasins you see below, to facilitate our review. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Bub Needed Shoes
It’s summertime. Caleb is just starting to walk. That means toddling in the yard – a yard full of sticks and rocks that are hard on little feet. (And pavement that can burn.) So he needed shoes to provide protection. But I was torn regarding what to get. I’ve mentioned before that being barefoot has a variety of health benefits. Regular shoes negate all of those benefits, but sometimes we just need to protect our feet!
So I was thrilled to come across these Freshly Picked moccasins, which maintain most of those barefoot benefits, but still protect his little feet against sharp rocks and such.
Freshly Picked Moccasins
These sweet baby moccasins are made of soft leather, just as moccasins traditionally have been. That means they’re flexible, to allow for proper foot development and better balance than hard-soled shoes. And because it’s leather, it allows the wearer to remain “grounded” to the earth instead of “buffering” like rubber does.
(My poor scraggly-headed kiddo has had a haircut since then!)
I was initially skeptical of the company’s claims that they’re designed not to fall off, but they’re right. It’s hard to explain – you’d have to see it – but the design is pretty clever. There’s elastic in there, believe it or not (it’s hidden), and it allows the shoes to “open up” a little for going on and off, but then snug up. Caleb is just too big for the next size down (the sizing chart was very accurate, by the way), so his are a little on the loose side, and he can “crawl out of” them. But they don’t just fall off when we’re carrying him around or something, or while he’s trying to walk.
As far as I can tell, he finds them pretty comfortable, too.
Unpacking
The packaging for these is pretty great. Check this out:
That’s what we saw when we opened up the package. (Well, that and the packing slip, but I didn’t figure you needed or wanted to see my packing slip.) The moccasins are in this cotton drawstring bag.
And the inside of the box is a fun “blank picture” the kids can decorate with the provided stickers.

Oh I love his adorable “scraggly” hair, he’s so darn cute! OMGoodness, I have been swooning over these moccs for the longest time. Aw, thanks! I kinda like his scraggly hair, too. That’s why I dragged my feet over getting his hair cut. He wears the “rugged” look, well, I think, and I was afraid he’d end up with an overly-polished (for him) “Leave it to Beaver” kind of cut. But the hairdresser did a fabulous job keeping his curls intact while getting it out of his face. 🙂
