So you [or your husband] recently got that awesome promotion that you have worked incredibly hard for. Problem is, the job is in a different city and the promotion will require you to uproot your family. Having to move your family can be stressful for many reasons: you are leaving a place you have called home for a number of years to go off to an unknown town; the kids will have to make new friends and start at a new school.
But moving does not have to be a complete bummer. Here are some awesome tips that will help ease the burden for the whole family.
Have a Discussion
Chances are, the announcement of moving did not go over too well with the kids. The first thing to do is give them time to process the information. After they have had a chance to digest this new reality, have a conversation with the whole family. Answer any questions as honestly and as positively as you can. Before the actual move takes place, take them on a tour of the new area so that they have an introduction to their new surroundings.
If possible, let them choose their rooms beforehand. This can take a new and scary situation into an exciting new adventure that your kids can be part of. Having an honest and open discussion can offset a lot of anxiety that your family may have due to moving.
Less is more
It is no secret that families can accumulate a lot of things over the years. A great way to ease the burden of hauling all of your belongings is to have a garage sale. Create some buzz on a few social media sites to promote your upcoming sale. You can also place signs around your neighborhood. Recruit the help of your family and a few friends to move the items to your lawn. Make sure your inventory looks appealing by organizing the items so that buyers can easily comb through the sale.
By holding a moving sale, you can relieve the burden of moving items you do not use on a regular basis, while making a few extra bucks.
If you still have a ton of stuff, you can always look into a moving container rental to aid in moving your items to the new place.
Say Goodbye
Plan a Going Away party for your friends and family to see you off. The hardest part of moving is leaving all of the amazing people in your life behind. This will give you and your family a chance to close the chapter of this story and start anew in the next town. Let the whole family be part of planning the party. Including them in the festivities will help them adjust to the move significantly. Saying goodbye is a helpful transition, especially for the kids. Also be open to letting them visit once they are all settled in at the new place.
