Teach Them Diligently to Your Children
(Child Training/Homeschooling)
This section is accompanied by a vintage image of a mother rocking a baby, and the following Scripture passage (the “Shema”):
“Hear, O Israel: YHWH our God, YHWH is one! You shall love YHWH your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” – Deut. 6:4-9
This contains a list of Dewey numbers by tens (available from my printables page) for reference at the library.
Following that list are planner pages for keeping a school log.
Next is a list of things to work on with Ariel. It includes character issues, academics, and Scriptural teaching. At the time of this writing, the list is: Bible memory, obedience/respect, letter recognition, tying shoes, and Spanish.
I have a list of preschool activities, for days when I’m drawing a blank.
The next couple pages are a copy of the Virginia homeschool statutes.
Then I have several pages of basic child training reminders printed out from Raising Godly Tomatoes. (These include a page of basic obedience training, a page describing tomato staking, and two pages about “W.A.R.”)
Future Plans:
A list of Bible verses we’d like to work on memorizing in the future will go in there, as well, but I haven’t made it yet.
Virginia has a religious exemption law regarding schooling, and this is the law under which we will be homeschooling. In the near future, we will draft a “religious objection” statement, have it notarized, and keep it in here.
Finally, I intend to add a “weekly school plan.” This is not anything complex; just a note of which subjects to focus on each day – language skills on Monday, art on Tuesday, math on Wednesday, etc. The only reason for this is to ensure that I don’t forget to teach Ariel to count because I’m so busy teaching her to draw, or some such. 🙂
