Stephanie just posted about an event she went to. At the end of this event, there were three whole pizzas, several 2-liters of soda, and a couple other things left over. The others were just going to throw them away. [Picture my jaw dropping to the floor here.]
We’re talking about perfectly good food. Even if these people are so well-off that they can afford Hilton Head rentals every year for vacation, new furniture every few years when they redecorate, etc., that is just plain wasteful. (If no one there wanted it, at least they could have driven down and handed it to someone living under a bridge or in a cardboard box on the street.) What warped priorities modern America embraces. [Picture me shaking my head in amazement and lack of understanding.]
I am so with you. I was just talking about this today!! People take so much for granted. With our kids in Haiti (and our son recovering from malnourishment) it is on my mind all the more.
I am in agreement with this feeling of wasting food! My husband and I were given Sonic gift cards from a friend, so we went there for lunch a few weeks ago. They didn’t get his burger right, just forgot the bacon. The logical solution is to bring him out some bacon. Instead, they made a whole new burger, then TOOK the burger he had, and tossed it in the waste bin next to us. I was in shock, and actually couldn’t enjoy my lunch after that. I don’t understand how wasteful people are around us. I would have rather taken that burger home to one of our teenage boys, as they seem to always be hungry!
One thing that’s kind of crazy is that fast food places are legally prevented from donating any of their excess food. At the end of the day, if they have food left already prepared but not sold (which they usually do), they are not allowed to donate it to a shelter or someplace like that. So they have to just throw it away. 🙁
It’s sad, though, that if they mess up your order, they won’t just let you keep the original “goof up” along with the corrected order.
Jaw dropping is exactly how I felt. And no these people are not well off. They are mostly middle classes two income families.
