One of the items on my 101 Things in 1001 Days list is to find healthy/environmentally-friendly replacements for two household or personal products. I’ve been working on this; I’ve been looking and trying things. But I haven’t had much success yet in finding things that actually work for me.
However.
One of the speakers for the Relevant conference mentioned a product that sounded intriguing, so I bought it. It’s called Shave Secret, and it’s a tiny bottle of oil (looks a little like an eyedrop bottle). Wal-Mart had it for a little under $4. You use a few drops of this stuff (or, in the case of legs, a few drops per “section” of leg), and it helps the razor to glide, without the need for shaving creams, gels, etc. I’ve only tried it once, so far, but it worked very well.
I got a smoother shave than I’ve ever gotten before (and I’ve tried a wide variety of shaving creams and shaving cream alternatives), and with no razor burn or anything after the fact. Just super-smooth legs. I think it’s going to take a bit of trial-and-error to get used to working with it because it’s so different than what I’m accustomed to but, so far, it’s working for me.
Now for the challenge.
I challenge you to find at least one product you can replace with something that’s better for you and/or for the environment. (Usually the two go together.) Even if we all just replaced one bottle of something a year with a better alternative, we could make a huge difference. So try to find one thing, whether it’s your dish detergent, shampoo — whatever. Baby steps!
What a great idea! I’ve been trying to walk more lightly on Creation for the past 20 years, and I have found that almost every time I switch to something that’s better for the environment, it turns out I like it better for other reasons too! The most amazing example is the reusable menstrual cup (alternative to tampons)–click my name for details–it’s a wonderful thing and saves tons of money and trash.
