We hear regularly about the benefits of family dinner but, honestly, sometimes I wonder how much family dinnertime really benefits my children. We have to have dinnertime conversation for that, right? But sometimes we just don’t know where to start. That’s where tools like TableTopics can come in handy.
These boxes of cards offer questions to get discussion started. They can be used at the dinner table, for parties, road trips, and more.
(Do keep in mind that not all of the sets are child-friendly. Some are designed for adults only, so pay attention to which set you’re buying if you’re getting it for whole-family use!)
I received the “Do it Yourself Therapy” set for review which, honestly, would not have been my first choice. (Or, probably, in my top ten. There are plenty of card decks!) This one is intended for ages 18+ but the cards I’ve seen so far would, for the most part, not be inappropriate for children. (The ones I saw that wouldn’t be appropriate weren’t indecent or anything, just not useful for children.) Some of them could still be used at the family table; you’d just have to pick and choose. I did get to see the quality of the game. The cube the cards come in is quite hefty, and the cards are very sturdy.
Sets like the Family or Family Gathering
set would make good family gifts. (The Couples
set might, too, if the family you’re buying the gift for doesn’t have children of speaking age yet.) Other, more off-the-wall sets like the ’80s
, would make fun gifts for the right recipients. And the TableTopics “to go
” sets would be good stocking stuffers.
