Lacking a tennis racket or court access, a bicycle or appropriate place to ride it, a treadmill or elliptical machine, etc., I had to find some means of regular exercise. Besides being something I can do regularly with no special equipment and without having to go someplace, it had to be easy enough that I can do it now (in my terrible state of physical stamina, agility, etc.) and yet something that will help me work up to harder exercise as my state of fitness improves.
Walking was the obvious answer, but it took my husband’s intelligence to figure out where I could walk. (Most of our road has this huge gravel that will turn your ankle.) He had the idea of walking around our circular driveway, and down just enough of the road to get to the other end of the driveway so I can come back up. I measured it, using a pedometer, and found that 7 of these “loops” comes out to .49 miles — close enough to half a mile for my purposes.
I can walk 6 loops in 10 minutes (7 in just over that) so it doesn’t take much time out of my day. The plan is to work up to the point that I am eventually running a mile in 10 minutes each day. (That point’s a long way off!) I’m pleased that it’s only this far into the year and I can cross this one off of my list. 🙂 Walking for the last two weeks will, obviously, not go very far toward my ultimate fitness goals, but it’s a good start on establishing the habit.
Yep! All it takes is a little husbandly ingenuity, doesn’t it?! 🙂
Have fun walking! I think I might start doing the same thing, in our cul-de-sac neighborhood. Thanks for the little nudge.
