I think that most of us could stand to pray more. I know I certainly could. So when I had the opportunity to request a copy of 365 Days to a Prayer-Filled Life through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers’ program, I jumped on it.
The book was not at all what I expected. I had expected a series of “exercises,” as it were, designed to build my ability to pray. I was thinking along the lines of gradually increasing the time I pray, different ways to pray, various topics to focus on during prayer, etc. But this is not really a book about prayer!
What it is, is a dated devotional. For each day of the year, there is a one-page devotional consisting of three sections. The first section varies. Many of them are what I would call “affirmations,” based on Scripture. Some of them are anecdotes or other means of illustrating or explaining Scriptural concepts. Following this section is a short prayer based on the same theme. Finally, several Scripture references are offered, including several that are used as references for the first two sections and one that is a longer suggested reading.
As a devotional, it does seem to be good. It just isn’t the prayer-focused book I was expecting.
