I was presented with the “challenge” to find some Christmas gift ideas from the Better Homes & Gardens product line at Wal-Mart, at three price points: $20, $10, and $5. It wasn’t actually much of a challenge, ‘though some of the products aren’t available online, so I wish I’d taken my camera to the store! I would love to be able to show you some of the items I did not purchase. (I had no idea there were so many Better Homes & Gardens products!)
$20
For around $20 (give or take), there are a number of options. For just over, there are some gorgeous quilts. For just under, there are some cozy sherpa throws. These are available in Christmas (and autumn) themes, as well as for “everyday.” (They have a black-and-white damask sherpa throw that I really love.)
I chose a pair of serving pieces. This platter is truly HUGE! It can be difficult to find a platter that will accommodate, for instance, a whole turkey when the extended family is coming. (We usually buy the biggest turkey we can find – around 23 lbs.) This would have no trouble. The serving bowl is pretty large, too.

A simple ribbon creates a pretty presentation.

$10
The $10 price point offers lots of choices, especially if you combine pieces. Each of the serving pieces above is $10, individually. There are other serving pieces, as well, including cake stands and some nifty three-section servers that would be great for cut veggies or candy.
I chose a set of ramekins. These are not holiday pieces, per se, but they’re great for the holidays. Their decorative, but solid white, appearance meshes well with holiday pieces, but can be used year-round. All by themselves, they would make a great gift. (In case you don’t know what ramekins are, they’re individual baking dishes.)

For a pretty presentation, take them out of the box they come in, and line them up in a long, narrow basket or other narrow container, like a drawer divider. Fill each one with a different candy or a different variety of (in-the-shell) nut.
$5
Believe it or not, this is a price point with lots of choices, as well! A variety of candles are available, including not only pillars, votives, and tealights, but also jar candles and candles in ceramic canisters. There are wax melts (just a couple dollars each) to go with wax burners – which coordinate with the serving pieces you saw above. There are some holders for jar candles, with pretty shades. (I especially liked one with a cut-metal shade, but there was only one left in my store, and it was pretty beat up.) There are table linens: runners, cloth napkins, etc. And dishes.
I chose a pair of plates. I think they were $2.98 each, so the pair of them was about $6. You could give them that way, as a pair, tied with ribbon like the serving pieces above. Or buy one and use the remainder of your five dollars to buy the ingredients for cookies, brownies, or fudge, and present the goodies on the plate.
The mugs were the same price, and they would be a lot of fun to fill. Give one with a Starbucks Via packet. Or – and this could be a lot of fun – fill the mug up with loose, whole coffee beans. Is your recipient not a coffee fan? Include a hot cocoa packet or tea bags, fill the mug with candies, or use it to hold a “bouquet” of chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks.

Cute idea pairing the mug with some Starbucks Via. This might be great for my mailwoman.
