High end care homes, such as Greystoke Manor, now boast furnishings more akin to those seen in luxury hotels than traditional care homes. Many English care homes are now located in country houses and manors once reserved for the rich. There is even an English care home operator called Luxurycare that offers luxury care for dementia patients in luxury homes.
Despite all these claims of luxury, it is still best to care for your elderly loved ones at home. Even though they claim to be luxury facilities, today’s luxury care homes are still just care homes. In most cases, the luxury is simply a window dressing; your loved ones are not going to get better care because of plush carpets or fancy furniture.
In some cases, all the luxury care homes do is put on a show of luxury. They locate in a big old luxury house and make sure there are plenty of antiques, chandeliers, and expensive paintings around. These trappings won’t ensure a higher standard of care, and they definitely will not make up for the loneliness that your loved one will feel in such a facility.
The care given at the luxury facilities is much the same as any other care home. Movie nights, trips to Bingo, and trips to the hairdresser are the same as they would be in any other care home.
In some cases, the standard of care at a luxury facility can be lower because many of them are located in rural areas where there may be fewer qualified staff living.
Even though it may make you feel better to put your loved one in a luxury facility, it is always a better idea to check out alternatives such as home nursing care. The evidence shows that people who remain at home or with their family are happier, healthier, and live longer.
