Having just learned that our Operation Christmas Child shoebox went to Zambia this year, I’ve had geography on the brain. (Did you know that you can track your OCC shoebox(es) now? If you pay the shipping costs online, you print a bar-coded label, and they’ll tell you to which country your box was delivered. My children and I then read a little bit about that country.)
As I’ve been mulling over ways to teach geography to our children, I came across a really cool blog. Sarah at What’s Cooking in Your World is cooking her way through every country of the world, two dishes per week. (I’m not sure yet if that’s two dishes from one country, or two countries per week.) Although this would be a great site to browse just for fun, it could also be a very handy homeschooling resource. (Melinda at Weiser Academy arrived at the same conclusion.) Imagine – tried-and-tested recipes from every country of the world. (Unfortunately for us, she won’t get to Zambia for a while!) Currently, she’s up to Laos (and the Laotian Garlic Duck with Jasmine Rice looks really, really yummy!).
A couple other great geography/culture resources:
- World Atlas.com
- You Can Change the World
(or so I’m told; I don’t actually have this one yet)
