When I first heard about CookiesKids through Collective Bias, I was a little confused. People kept talking about buying their kids clothes, and I had thought it was a magazine. Turns out, I was mixing up CookiesKids (and online retailer) with Cookie magazine.
Now that I’ve gotten things straightened out in my head, and learned more about them, I know that they have a good mix of clothing choices and pretty decent prices, so I was thrilled to get to work on a Collective Bias project with them. The assignment? Shop for winter clothing for my girls. Oh, darn. (A little tongue-in-cheek there.) Each of my daughters actually had some specific clothing needs, so I was more particular during this shopping “trip” than I might otherwise have been, but I still found some things that fit the bill.
There are a lot of “trendy” options, which don’t interest us. And I was pretty disappointed in their blue jean selection for little girls. But they have a lot of basics, as well (poor jean selection in the 4-6 range notwithstanding), at great prices. They sell school uniforms, too, which I think work great for basic pieces, even if you don’t use uniforms for school. Who can’t use a pair of khaki pants or a plain white oxford or polo shirt?
If you’re interested in the step-by-step details of my shopping experience, you can find the play-by-play in my Google Plus album. Otherwise, the “summary” version is here.
Being the frugal shopper that I am, I started in the clearance section. Of course, I didn’t find everything I needed there, but I did find Ariel a dress. Dresses are what she really needed, and we found this brown shirtdress for only $8! This is a great basic wardrobe piece. Roll the sleeves up, or leave them down. Wear the dress by itself. Layer a shirt under it and unbutton the top few buttons. Or wear the whole thing unbuttoned as a long jacket over an otherwise complete outfit. And Ariel seems to have “soft summer” coloring, so this brown is a good neutral for her.
Sophia could benefit from some pants, but she really needed long-sleeved shirts. She only owned about four, and three of those are turtlenecks, which she’s already tried to return to me multiple times because she hates them. Because she essentially didn’t have any, I wanted to stick with basic solids, so they would go with everything. I found her three long-sleeved tees – pink, navy, and white. I also got her a pair of black corduroys. Her clothes cost around $25 for all four pieces, and make a basic wardrobe all by themselves!
Livia just needed winter clothing, in general, so I was a bit freer with her outfit choice. I did pick something that came in two pieces, though, so they could be interchanged, if necessary. In particular, I like the option of pairing the shirt with pants if it’s terribly cold. I also found her a 2-pack of socks that look like Mary Janes. (We love these!)
Be sure to check for coupon codes. If you sign up for the CookiesKids newsletter, they’ll send you promo codes periodically. Otherwise, just keep your eyes open for them! The day I shopped, they were having a special scavenger hunt, via their Facebook page, and I ended up with a 20% off coupon code. Don’t forget about ShopatHome.com, either!
And if you like CookiesKids and shop there regularly, sign up for their refer-a-friend program. You can earn shopping dollars each time a friend becomes a new CookiesKids shopper.
