Crayola has been a household name for many years. In our home, Crayola = quality, at least where art supplies for children are concerned. The classics still make great gifts – but now there are innovate new products available for gifting, as well. We got the opportunity to try four products in particular, two I would consider to be “classic Crayola,” and two I would consider to be innovative and new.
Glow Book
The first of the innovative items is the Glow Book. This “book” consists of four clear acrylic pages, a special electronic “spine,” and special markers. Children draw different images on each of the pages, then insert them in the spine and turn it on. The Glow Book illuminates each page in turn, causing the images to show up vividly. You have to see it to really understand it, so check out the video below. (This product requires batteries.)
Jewelry Boutique
My girls loved this one! The Jewelry Boutique uses Crayola’s Model Magic for the creation of beads and other jewelry pieces. The cleverly-designed tray includes containers for four different colors of Model Magic, several cups for storing bead findings, and the innovative bead roller. It even has embossed designs on it that you can use to imprint your finished beads!
Several packages of colored Model Magic are included, as are a number of jewelry findings – including elastic cord and some pendant bases – as well as a bead drying rack, beard piercer (to create the holes for stringing), and bead glaze. This has been a real hit with my nine-year-old and four-year-old.
Ultimate Art Supply Case
The Ultimate Art Supply Case is the perfect portable gift. The plastic case is somewhat briefcase-like and encases a variety of basic art supplies. It holds (and includes): 24 crayons, 8 (washable) markers, 12 colored pencils, 8 (washable) watercolors, a paint brush, school glue, scissors, and colored paper. I love that it is all self-contained. I don’t love that it includes markers. (Markers – even washable ones – are a disaster around here.) This is a good basic gift, though, with very broad appeal.
Telescoping Crayon Tower
The Telescoping Crayon Tower is a favorite around here – with the kids and with Mom. (I have my own. 😉 ) It neatly holds 150 crayons (included) and a sharpener. It telescopes up for easy access to every color, but collapses back down for (fairly) compact storage.
If none of these meet your gift-giving needs, but you still like the idea of giving art/craft supplies, take a look at Crayola’s Gift Guide. There you can browse their products by age.
