I had never heard of Asmodee games prior to getting this game for review. But if this is the quality of what they produce, we’ll have to look at the rest of their games. 🙂 Dixit Journey was/is a fun game, and well-designed. It has elements that are familiar from other games, but combined in a unique way.
The bulk of the game is comprised of cards with pictures on them. The pictures are somewhat whimsical “fantasy”-type images. One player creates a clue that reminds him of one of the cards in his hand. The other players then find cards in their hand that they believe best match the clue. These cards are then shuffled together, and players must guess which was the original card.
The concept of a “clue” is pretty open-ended. Essentially, if it can be uttered, it qualifies as a clue. This, and the inherent creativity of the human mind, makes for a different game each time.
Even the details of the game are well-designed. The board contains numbered spots along the edge for laying out the cards to be voted on, so it’s easy to tell what you’re voting for. It also has a scoring summary printed on it in large type, so you don’t have to keep digging out the instructions. The spaces in the box for holding the game pieces are perfectly designed so nothing slides around or gets lost. And the artwork on the cards is beautiful!
There are previous DiXit games. I haven’t seen them in person, but my impression is that DiXit, DiXit 2
, and DiXit Odyssey
are the same essential game concept, but different card collections (much like there are different editions of Trivial Pursuit). DiXit Jinx appears to be something of the “high-speed” version of DiXit. And that’s just the DiXit suite – there are a whole slew of other games!
Our only disappointment was that this is for ages 8 and up – and it really isn’t very playable for a younger child. (Sophia can often play games intended for older players, if we help with the reading.) There is no reading involved in this game, but young children think on a whole different wavelength than older children and adults and it sort of “throws” the game if you put them into the mix. So this is one to save for when your kids are older, or for after the younger ones are in bed.
We thoroughly enjoyed it, though!
