The creation of computers, the internet, and the world wide web have really changed how we live our everyday lives. (Well, maybe that’s just me. But I don’t think so.) I mean, I’m not that old, but I remember when looking up a book at the library meant pulling out drawers full of cards and flipping through. That somehow seems like a whole different life!
But some of us have given different parts of our lives over to computers and/or the web, and I’m curious what you do online, what you do on the computer (but offline), and what you still do “old school.” For instance, I still use a paper-and-pencil day planner.
Do you back up your computer on-site? Do you back it up online? Do you post photos on Flickr or Photobucket? (I do, but not often.) Do you send large files with SendNow? Are you on Facebook? (I am!) Twitter? (I tweet! See my sidebar.) Do you use the internet for job hunting? Do you use online file sharing? (I keep hearing about “the cloud.”) Are your books still made of paper, or are you transitioning to electronic versions?
Do you see technology as a good or bad thing, or some of both? (I’m in the “some of both” camp, myself.)
I love using a computer for database-type jobs. The internet is like one huge research database. My books are in LibraryThing. (Well, some of them are, and I’m working on the rest.) My recipes are in a software program (but my frequently-used ones are on paper, too). I will soon be putting my sewing patterns into a database program, too. Being able to just run a search makes it so much easier to find something in a collection! (But I still miss card catalogs. Go figure!)
Are there other things you do online, or with a computer, that I haven’t thought of (and might benefit from!)?
