Here’s a simple tutorial for you. For a recent Chuck swap at Craftster, I made an iPod holder out of a pocket protector. This doesn’t take any mad crafting skills or anything; it’s pretty easy.
You will need:
- pocket protector (with a flap helps)
- craft foam sheet with self-adhesive backing
- 2 buttons (optional – shank-style is better)
- thread (if you’re using the buttons)
- needle (if you’re using the buttons)
- scissors
Cut two pieces out of the craft foam, just slightly smaller than the opening inside the pocket protector. I didn’t measure or anything; just eyeballed it. (You are going slightly smaller to accommodate the thickness of the foam.)
Now, stick these pieces to the inside of the pocket protector – one to the front and one to the back. Here’s what worked best for me: I pulled the backing off of a piece, then tore it in half vertically and stuck it back on. That allowed me to slide the foam back down inside the pocket protector and still be able to pull the backing off once it was in.
If you would like to add a cord wrap to your cozy, sew two buttons onto the protector’s flap. I used flat buttons, and they don’t work very well. Shank buttons would have worked better (but I didn’t have any). Just be sure that the holes you stitch through aren’t too close together, or the vinyl may just tear through and make one large hole. (If you like, you can stick a small piece of packing tape over the stitching on the back of the flap for added security. It won’t be visible.)
That’s it! More artistic folk than I could decorate this with Sharpies or rubber stamping (You’d have to use the right ink for this, because of the vinyl.), or maybe something like a temporary tattoo. I would’ve messed it up had I tried, so mine is just plain white. 😉
How crafty. 🙂 Love it.
