Grandmother Remembers Holidays
fits right in with our family history study, although it isn’t a book for the girls to make use of. This is a keepsake book designed for Grandma to fill in for her grandchildren. New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, “Spring Holiday,” Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, “Winter Holiday,” and birthdays are all given space.
There is also a small section at the beginning for general remembrances of the recipient’s parent, and a section at the end for vacation memories.
This is a full-size, full-color hardcover book. Each section begins with a short poem.
It’s a wonderful idea, but it’s tricky producing anything of this nature that tries to be one-size-fits-all. There was an obvious attempt to accommodate everyone, as seen in the use of “Spring Holiday” and “Winter Holiday” rather than, for instance, “Easter” and “Christmas.” But Jewish families also celebrate Sukkot, which isn’t given space. Black families in America may celebrate Christmas and Kwanzaa – both winter holidays. And of course people outside of the U.S. have no reason to celebrate Fourth of July!
Still, if this framework fits your family well – or at least pretty close – this can be a neat keepsake.
