I received the following CD to facilitate my review, as well as a thank you for posting. However, as always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
30 Favorite Irish Christmas Carols
Thanksgiving is past, so it’s now officially the “Christmas season,” which means Christmas music! I’ve been listening to this particular Christmas music for a little while already, though, because I was “previewing” it for you: 30 Favorite Irish Christmas Carols.
I listened for several days before I realized there’s a second disc. It should have been obvious — it’s right on the package — but I forgot by the time it arrived and apparently overlooked it on the case. I didn’t see the second disc the first time I opened it, either. So, just in case anyone else was as dense as I am (probably not), don’t miss it; there are two discs.
See? Two discs.
So what do I think of the music ON the two discs? Well, in terms of its being Christmas music, my opinion is kind of mixed. Some of it doesn’t sound very Christmassy to me. To some degree, that’s because some songs just sound…odd…with Celtic music behind them. We’re just so accustomed to hearing them in a certain style! In a few cases, I just didn’t recognize the songs, so I wouldn’t associate them with Christmas.
However, the music is all beautiful. Much of it is very soothing. So I’d be inclined to call this “Irish-inspired music to play during Christmastime.”
For the combination of celtic musical style + traditional Christmas song, my favorite is The Holly and the Ivy. It “translates” well to this musical style, while still sounding Christmassy.
