Nordic Naturals is a big name in fish oils and related supplements (omega-3’s, etc.). They’re well-known for quality and trustworthiness. We’ve been using their fish oils (basic liquids/gel caps) for a while, but had not ever tried their other products until we received the two items you’ll see here, for this review.
Prenatal DHA
The prenatal DHA is a basic gel cap. The name is a little misleading as, although DHA is emphasized, this is not just DHA. It also contains EPA (another Omega-3 fatty acid), and the main ingredient is purified fish oil. So this is more multidimensional than you might think.
It smells a bit fishy when you open the bottle, but it doesn’ttaste fishy. (That’s the beauty of gel caps – and purification!) The capsules actually taste mildly sweet when they hit my tongue. This is a way easier way to get Omega-3’s than to gag on a spoonful of oil. (I just have texture issues with a mouthful of oil, regardless of whether it tastes fishy or not.)
Omega-3 Jellies
The Omega-3 Jellies are meant for children. My children said they “taste like nothing,” which I guess is not bad. 😉 I tasted one, and I thought it was kind of meh, but, then, I can swallow a pill so I don’t have to take these! They’re a little oily on the outside, so make sure the kiddoes don’t hold onto them and then wipe their hands on their clothes or something.
It’s also important to be aware that they’re pretty chewy. These are not “gummies” in the sense of gumdrop-like texture. They’re sort of – tough? chewy. Almost a rubbery kind of texture. I’m doing a terrible job describing it and it makes it sound far worse than it is. The point is they’re not soft, so be careful if your little ones can’t chew well. I was afraid my toddler might choke on it the first time I gave her one, because of the texture, but she did okay with it. (I watch her closely, though, until she’s finished!)
I don’t really think anyone in our house would consider these one of our favorite supplements, but fish oils are very, very beneficial for health, and the other options for taking them (for those who can’t swallow capsules) are definitely not better than these! So it’s a good trade-off.
I do really like the way these are packaged. Each individual jelly is in one of those little pop-through foil doohickeys. This not only keeps them fresh, it makes it possible to literally take as few as one with you if you’re traveling. They’re not going to be sticking together or making a mess in your purse, and you don’t have to find a pillbox to transport them in.
Disclosure: Nordic Naturals provided me with a package of each of the products mentioned above, to facilitate my review, as well as packages to facilitate the Baby Shower for Jesus review and giveaway. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Nordic Naturals is a great company. I try to buy their fish oil supplements and gummies for my children and myself whenever I can afford it. I can really see a difference in my son’s behavior and attitude when he’s taking them.
I always have a hard time picking out prenantal vitamins and have recently been researching vitamins for my preschooler. These look great!!
