How to Cook Steak-Umms in the Oven
When you want a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, you probably want to cook your Steak-umms (or store brand equivalent) the conventional way. But I often just want to cook the meat so I can cut it up and put it in something – and I don’t want the hassle of cooking each one individually.
I searched all over for other cooking instructions and couldn’t find any, so I experimented to figure out how to cook the sandwich steaks in the oven.
Here’s the trick:
Put the steaks in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. (I can get three at a time onto my cookie sheet. On a slightly larger sheet, I can get four — two by two.) Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Then you can take the meat out, cut it up, and use it in whatever you want: salad, pasta, baked potato topping – whatever.
Another little trick: Cutting these steaks into strips is super-quick and easy with a pizza cutter!
This little trick works for me! 🙂
Thank you!!! This was so much easier than frying!!!
You’re so welcome! I don’t mind frying them when I only need one, but if I’m doing multiples, that gets really tedious.
Do you flip them once or leave em alone?
You can do them either way. I usually leave them alone, and they’ll cook okay that way. They don’t get as brown in the middle of the top, though, because they kind of “bubble up” during cooking. If that’s important to you, you can flip them.
Thank you for posting this. I will definitely try it this way. Frying multiples can get messy. And annoying.
I cooked them for 11 minutes @ 350 & they turned out great!
Do you have to flip them? And also do you line the baking sheet with foil?
Hi Rachel,
I came across your website while looking up on how to cook steak! Just a question though, if you don’t put oil, will the steak burn or stick to the pan?

I have not had a problem with that. The center does stick a bit as it thaws and before it’s done, but once it’s cooked through, it frees back up.
Perfect thanks! Started a flat pan early with some peppers and onions in the oven. Tossed in two rounds of steakums, shredded and added back the first batch, topped the whole lump with cheese, and used the tongs to disperse on to some cobblestone Philly buns. Delish with a side of deep fried tater tots.
Thank you! This is so much easier, and less messy, than making them the traditional way.
Did you put the cheese on while they were in the oven or after?
I usually do it after, but I’m often not cooking them for the traditional sandwich. They do have a tendency to cool fairly quickly, so you might want to put the cheese on a minute or two before you take them out.
Oh okay thank you
Thank you! OMgee this was so much easier and less messy. I actually did 350 for 10 minutes, then flipped them and put them back in for an additional 5 minutes and this was EVERYTHING!! No pink and no concerns about being undercooked. This is now the only way for me!!!
Awesome way to cool them, thanks so much!
Thank you for this helpful tip. I have been wanting a way to cook steaks that is less greasy and messy.
SOOO helpful!!! And why have I not thought of cutting them into strips?? GENIUS 😃!! Thank you so much!
Do they splatter less than cooking them in the pan?
Hate the greasy mess.
I think so, although it’s hard to directly compare. At the very least, if it’s splattering, it’s splattering in the oven instead of all over your kitchen.
I just tried this and it worked perfectly! I was dreading putting them in the frying pan and having the grease splatter everywhere including on me! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Thank You! I was not looking forward to the frying pan.
