The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids
Many, if not most, of my readers are probably already familiar with The Old Farmer’s Almanac. In case you aren’t, it is a “reference book that reads like a magazine,” filled with various bits of trivia and information. Because it was originally intended for farmers, there is an emphasis on farming- (or gardening-) related helps, such as weather predictions and planting tips.
This new Almanac for kids contains similar information, but in a fun format for children. It’s printed in full-color, and includes sections about the Calendar, Astronomy, Weather, Nature, In the Garden, On the Farm, Pets, Sports, Crafts, Health, and Amusement. In keeping with tradition, this Almanac has something of an emphasis on skills and knowledge necessary for self-sufficiency. But it’s fun! The first page is about triskaidekaphobia. Don’t know what that is? I guess you need the almanac! 😉 (Okay, or a dictionary. And, no, I didn’t know what it was until I read the book.)
Pages 124-125 list the skills expected of boys and girls “on the farm,” as described by The Old Farmer’s Almanac in 1867. Remind your children of this list next time they complain about being asked to make their beds! Other pages talk about recognizing leaves by their autumn colors, attracting butterflies, growing avocadoes, dealing with poison ivy, and more.
Children shouldn’t get bored with this for a long time!
