We’re all familiar with petroleum jelly. It has dozens of uses, for baby care and otherwise. For instance:
For Baby
- Use as a diaper cream to create a protective barrier between baby’s bottom and the potentially wet/soiled diaper.
- Lubricate a thermometer before taking a rectal temperature. (I try to avoid this when possible, anyway, but…)
For Mama
- Rub on your lips to prevent chapping.
- Remove eye makeup with it.
- Use it to soften elbow and/or cuticles.
Unfortunately, petroleum jelly is just that – petroleum jelly. Yuck! Petroleum products are really not good for the skin, and certainly not healthy to be absorbed through the skin into the rest of the body! Un-petroleum jelly is a much better alternative, and Waxelene is a great option.
Made primarily from beeswax and soy oil (organic), this non-petroleum option approximates the texture/consistency of petroleum jelly, while being much friendlier to the skin. I find it very slightly softer (because these oils soften with relatively low heat, so when they come into contact with the body, they begin to soften a tad). Personally, I find the glass jar with its metal lid considerably more aesthetically pleasing, too, although that, of course, doesn’t have anything to do with the efficacy of the product!
While I cringe at the idea of using petroleum jelly for some of the purposes I’ve seen proposed (on healing tattoos, on the teeth to prevent lips sticking during public appearances and/or to keep lipstick from adhering, etc.), I am perfectly comfortable using Waxelene for anything one would normally use petroleum jelly for. (Please note that it’s only recommended for external use; I’m not suggesting you put it on your teeth. But it has to be better for putting in your mouth than a petroleum product!)
I believe it would also serve well as a carrier for an essential oil blend, depending on your needs.
Waxelene is biodegradable, is made in America, is not tested on animals, and is GMO-free. (Yay! And thank you!) You can find it at CVS, Whole Foods, or at Amazon. (Of course, you can get it from their own website, too.)
What would you use Waxelene for, in the nursery or elsewhere?
Disclosure: Thank you to Waxelene for providing my jar of product for review. Waxelene will also be participating in the Naturally Healthy Baby giveaway in a few weeks, so keep your eyes open! As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
