Now that you have plenty of popcorn, you need a movie to watch while you eat it, right? How ’bout a moms’ night in with Moms’ Night Out?
It had been years since I’d been to the theater when this movie hit theaters. (Wait. Scratch that. I did see Grease at the drive-in once, on 50’s night. But apart from that it had been years. And years since I’d been to the “regular” theater.) And, frankly, I didn’t have super-high expectations of this, going in.
With well-known actors like Sean Astin and Patricia Heaton in the mix, I figured the quality, at least, wouldn’ t be awful, but as far as plot goes…I was expecting mediocre. And from a few of the previews I’d seen, I’d gotten a little bit of an impression that it was one of those “dads are totally useless” kinds of movies – and we don’t do those. I halfway got my arm twisted to make me go…and WOW. Just WOW. This was the best movie I’ve seen in a very long time.
Moms’ Night Out
Seriously, people. This. is. my. life. Well, not the details, of course. I mean, this movie involves the police, a tattoo parlor, a very weird restaurant, and some other oddball craziness. But at the heart of it, that mama is me. And I so needed to hear the message of this film.
I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true: it made me laugh, and it made me cry.
Moms’ Night Out is absolutely hilarious! But it’s also absolutely touching. Yes, when the mamas go out and leave the dads with the kids, craziness ensues. But it’s not because the dads are idiots. It’s just one of those “when it rains, it pours” kinds of things.
We see daddies being good daddies (and husbands). We even see some stepping up to the plate where maybe they weren’t quite ready before.
We see several moms, in very different stages of their parenting, providing solid, understanding support for one another.
We see some parenting challenges and, yes, some missed “disciplinary opportunities” (hey, that’s real life!). We also see some brilliant examples of real heart parenting.
And ultimately, we are reminded that we are enough. We don’t need to be everything to everybody. We only need to be us – the women God made us.
And yet all of this is wrapped up in a package that keeps you laughing so it doesn’t stay so sappy that you can’t stand it. 😉
Before I even left the theater I had decided I wanted this one when it came out on DVD. Well, now it’s out on DVD. If you haven’t seen it, get it!
