I was introduced by a friend to the 30 Things My Kids Should Know blog series started (I think) by Jennifer at Baby Making Machine. It consists of thirty different post topics telling more about the blogger writing the posts. I thought this was a great idea, so I’m going to jump in, too. I won’t duplicate the list as a whole — you can find it at either of the above links; rather, I’m just going to dive right into the first one:
20 Random Things About Me
1. I seem to always be strange/in the minority, even in the details.
My blood type is AB, the least common ABO type.
My MBTI type is ENTJ. ENTJ’s are believed to comprise less than 1% of the female population.
And when I had my DNA tested (for genealogical purposes, primarily) and ran it through an analyzer, I found that all of my known genes indicate I should be a blue-eyed blonde. So obviously some yet-unknown gene is impacting or overriding the ones we know about!

2. I usually prefer non-fiction over fiction. And when I do read fiction, I usually prefer historical fiction and/or something that will otherwise teach me something.
(I’ve read some great Christian novels that have done an excellent job of illustrating spiritual truths! The Secret of the Rose series has been a long-standing favorite; I’ve recently discovered The Michelli Family series, which is also great.)
3. I love light and color.
4. I love music. Especially the bowed strings (violin, etc.).
5. My go-to thinking style is highly logical/rational/unemotional. That has its advantages. Unfortunately, it means that people often miss the fact that I also really love people.
6. I have never broken a bone.
7. When I was 16, I was pulled over on a Friday night…
…I wasn’t doing anything wrong but, being a new driver, I was probably driving somewhat erratically and I think the police officer wanted to be sure I wasn’t drunk. I was on my way home from a youth rally that night, though, where I had played a demon in a drama, and I still had “demon paint” all over my face. To this day, I wonder what that officer thought when I rolled down my window!
8. I don’t really have a favorite color. It totally depends on the context, the specific shade of the color, and sometimes even the material.
9. I have a hard time with routine because I get bored easily.
10. I hate to be wrong. (Doesn’t everybody?) And once I’ve decided I believe something, you will need a strong argument to convince me that I’m wrong. But if/when you convince me, I will be the first to admit it — even publicly, if need be.
11. My favorite part of the library is the 600’s, because those books are all about how to do stuff.
12. I am not an “animal person.”
I think that animals are more trouble than they’re worth unless they’re direct contributors, like laying hens or a guide dog.
13. I cannot write fiction worth a hoot. But I do write poetry.
(Well, I haven’t much in a long time, but I definitely have in the past.)
14. I only have a high school diploma, but I would make a great “career student.” I love school.
(Unfortunately, it’s expensive.)
[Update: I completed an AAS in Complementary/Alternative Medicine in 2017 and a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies (Health Sciences/Behavioral Sciences*/Business) in 2018. *This is counseling/coaching.]
15. I never cared anything about style and fashion until I was in my 30s. But now I’m learning that our appearance can do a lot to make us feel more or less vibrant, and to communicate more or less accurately to others who we are on the inside.
16. Food-wise, my “greatest weaknesses” are chocolate ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.
17. When I was younger, I wanted to be a middle school teacher “when I grew up.”
(Or a 5th grade teacher, since that’s as close as you can get to middle school — around here, anyway — and still not have to choose a subject to specialize in.)
18. I rarely read a novel (or watch a movie) twice.
(Although I probably should — at least on the novel thing.)
19. I’m a note-taker. When I read a book, it’s normal for me to take notes.
If the book belongs to me, and I don’t foresee my children needing to read it later and develop their own thoughts about it, I will typically just pencil my notes in the book itself. Otherwise, I’ll use sticky notes, and/or just make a list of comments on notebook paper. I have a whole folder of “book notes” in My Documents.
20. I like textures more than patterns/prints.
