I was provided by the company with the Food Huggers shown below, to facilitate my review. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
These Food Huggers are pretty cool. They don’t look like much in the box (well, except aesthetically pleasing, with the graduated colors!) but they’re a crazy-useful concept.
See, each silicone doohickey is designed to “hug” whatever need to cap off – be it an open can of something, half a vegetable you have leftover, etc. They come in graduated sizes so there’s one to fit whatever food it is you need to top.
Of course, I have half-vegetables all the time, but in the past month since we’ve gotten the Food Huggers, we seem to have finished ‘most everything off right away! I did find a few things to show you, though.
Here’s a Food Hugger used on a can of juice concentrate. We use it in small amounts in smoothies, and had been putting Press’n’Seal on it. But that doesn’t work very well on an icy can – especially when you keep peeling it off! This Food Hugger works great.
Here’s one on the second half of a kiwifruit. I know, a kiwifruit isn’t so large that you’re likely to have half of one left often. But my toddler was having it for lunch today, with something else, and didn’t need a whole one. Even as small as the fruit is, this fit. (By the way, it’s a little hard to tell in the photos, but this is not the same “lid” as the one on the juice can. That’s the next size up.)
Because they’re silicone, they stretch (somewhat; they’re kind of thick, so they aren’t made to stretch a lot), and they sort of “cling” to the sides of whatever you put them on. And they’re washable so you can use them over and over, which is easier on the wallet and the environment. That’s a win-win in my book. 🙂
In addition to the basic Food Huggers, there is also a set of Avocado Huggers available. These come in a package of two: one for the big avocados and one for the smaller ones. (I can never remember which variety is which.) I’m pretty sure I’ve never actually seen the larger ones in person. (Well, maybe I did at the international grocery and didn’t notice because everything else was pretty unusual.) So I honestly have no use for that one.
But the smaller one is pretty handy. It’s shaped like an avocado:
And the really cool thing is that the inner half-circle thingie (the “pit pocket”) can be an innie or an outie, depending on whether your avocado half contains a pit or not. (How well it stays pushed in seems to depend on the exact size of your pit, though. Just so you know. My pit seems to have been a little on the small side and the pit pocket kept wanting to pop back out.)
So these are pretty handy – and pretty affordable. The Food Huggers retail for $14.99 (for a set of four), the Avocado Huggers for $9.99.
