My copy of the book was provided by the publisher, to facilitate this review. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

Many of you are probably familiar with Not a Fan. I must confess I haven’t read it yet, but I know the name. From the same author, Kyle Idleman, comes AHA.
AHA is about the moments of clarity (I call them “light bulb moments” – you know, like in the cartoons where a light bulb goes on over someone’s head?) where our lives radically change – but specifically in a spiritual context. So we’re talking about lasting spiritual change. In Pastor Idleman’s experience, every one of these moments/experiences has three things in common:
- Awakening
- Honesty
- Action
Thus the “AHA.”
Awakening is the realization – whatever it is. Lots of people have awakening all the time, though. If it stops there, it doesn’t produce change. The next step is honesty. If you experience the “eureka!” moment, but then remain in denial, you still don’t experience change. Finally, you have to take action regarding the thing you’ve realized (and been honest about).
Idleman’s writing style is enjoyable. It’s straightforward and hard-hitting, but it’s conversational. He’s relatable, too; there’s no implication here that he’s above the rest of us and somehow doesn’t need change. He’s clear about the fact that he’s had AHA moments of his own, and will again in the future.
The backbone of the book is the story of the Prodigal Son, who found himself in the pigsty and realized his father’s love and mercy still abounded. Follow along as Idleman explains how AHA worked in the Prodigal Son’s life (and in the life of his brother). Additional illustration is provided through other real-life examples.
This is an excellent book; I highly recommend it.
