By now, most of us know “Magic Erasers” as being almost truly magic. They can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks, not least of which is cleaning crayon off the walls. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but I’m told that these are simply “melamine foam,” and can be purchased much more cost-effectively in bulk.
I am also told that Alka-Seltzer tablets can be used to clean the toilet. This is probably due to the citric acid and baking soda, so try just adding a a pinch of citric acid to your toilet, along with baking soda. (Citric acid is found in lemon juice, or you can usually find it, powdered, at the bulk food store.)
Spraying a surface with first vinegar, then peroxide (or the other way around) , so the products are permitted to mix on the surface, disinfects. (The combination temporarily produces a third chemical, which kills bacteria. I used to have a reference for this, but I’ve misplaced it. If you have one, feel free to share!)
Do you have any other frugal alternatives to household cleaners?
Wow, that is very interesting to know! I do love these sponges myself, though they definitely can leave very fine scratch marks on certain surfaces, like walls or other painted surfaces. But the alternative (scuffed up walls) can look much worse. Just test first, then you’ll get an idea whether you should go ahead or not. They can be used in grout lines as well.
Thank you for pointing that out, Terese! When I use them, it’s usually on such cruddy-looking spaces that I’ve never even noticed scratch marks – they’re still such an improvement! But that means I wouldn’t have known to check.
