Many of my readers are already very familiar with Dave Ramsey. Many of you have taken his Financial Peace course, and/or use his envelope system for budgeting. (Well, the envelope system isn’t solely his idea, but it’s well-known because of him.) Many of you might not know that he has a number of products for children!
“Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” So the saying goes. This Christmas, instead of just giving the children on your list “things,” give them tools to teach them how to acquire the “things ” they need for the rest of their lives.
My favorite children’s product from Dave is the boxed set of “Junior’s Adventures” books. These six stories follow “Junior” as he learns about spending, giving, saving, work, debt, and integrity. The stories are also available as audiobooks.
In addition to Junior’s Adventures, there is a Financial Peace, Jr. package. (On sale right now!) Designed for kids between three and twelve, this has a set of envelopes especially for them, a change purse, and a calculator, as well as savings charts and instructions for using the kit to teach your child about money. (There are no “refills,” so you will need one for each child.)
Finally, you can purchase Junior’s Adventure Bank. This is a special bank with three sections – one for giving, one for spending, and one for saving. To be honest, I don’t recommend this as highly as the other items. It’s a great concept, but it’s huge. I expected it to be about half as big as it turned out to be, and it would have functioned just fine at half the size. But I don’t know where we’re going to keep this.
I was surprised to find that my daughter was eager to try these. I figured they’d be the sort of “boring” (by her standards) have-to-do things that she would equate with schoolwork and drag her feet over. But, no, she got excited when she saw it, and said, “We can use this for me!”
These materials are available in a variety of combinations in various sets. My personal top pick would be the Kids’ Super Pack: the set of six books plus Financial Peace, Jr., but you can get sets with other items – or everything – if you like.
