We hate organ meat. I mean really hate it. I know it’s really good for us, and I’ve tried to add it to our diet various ways, and it just has been an epic fail. We don’t like the way it smells when it’s cooking. Even when I mix just a small percentage of ground liver into ground beef, we think it tastes so bad I had to reassure my family it wasn’t rotten. All of which is to say we really, really do not like organ meat.
And then Pluck happened.
What is Pluck?
This is such a cool idea! Pluck is a seasoning blend, made from a mix of dessicated (dried) organ meats and various herbs and spices. It largely tastes like a lemon-garlic blend, and it does not taste like organ meat at all. The organ meats come through only in the form of an overall umami undertone. (“Umami” is a flavor note that many people believe should be included along with sour, sweet, salty, and bitter, and which English didn’t have an existing word for. It’s a savory kind of flavor, almost earthy, like what you get with meats and mushrooms.)
The organs are a mix: liver, spleen, kidney, heart, and pancreas. They come from grass-fed, grass-finished cows raised in New Zealand (just like most quality beef liver supplements). And the additional ingredients are quality, too — like Redmond’s RealSalt.
It’s an all-purpose seasoning blend that can be used on pretty much anything savory (not sweet). As the company puts it, if you would eat it with salt and pepper, you can probably eat it with Pluck.
But is it REALLY Good?
I ordered some myself to try before mentioning it to you, because…have I mentioned we hate organ meats? 😉 I didn’t want to just think something sounds cool and recommend it, and then find out it’s actually gross.
So far I’ve tried it carrots, chicken, and turkey-and-cheese, and found it to be pretty good.
The only real downside I saw was that it’s not AutoImmune Paleo-friendly…BUT…
Between the time I ordered and the time I wrote this post, they came out with several new flavors! The one I have is the “All-Purpose” (in the orange package). There is also now a “Spicy” and a “Zesty Garlic,” along with a plain one (that’s just the organs without added seasonings; aka “Pure”) — and the Zesty Garlic and the plain are both AIP-compliant!
Pluck comes in a small packet so you can refill whatever spice jars you use at home. (I understand they have their own set of Pluck spice jars coming, too.) I reorganized my spices a while back in this little mini mason jars, so I put my Pluck in another mini mason jar with a shaker lid.

More Details About Pluck
Hopefully it’s obvious that you’re not going to get a huge dose of organ meats this way. But every little bit adds up, and these are versatile enough that you can add them to a lot of different things.
It’s more expensive than other seasoning blends, which may give some people pause at first. You have to stop and think about this. You’re buying highly-concentrated meat. That makes for meat prices, not just garlic prices. So if you can get beyond the initial knee-jerk “…for a spice blend?!” you’ll realize it’s really quite reasonably priced.
