We talked on Wednesday about rice being a poor choice as baby’s first food. If rice is a bad first food, what makes a good one? Good first foods are those which are high in fat and high in protein but still easy enough for baby to eat with no teeth. Following are a few suggestions of foods that fit that description:
Avocados
Avocados are high in healthy fats and soft enough to mash with a fork. These make a quick and easy first food for baby.
Liver (Powder)
For most Westerners liver seems like an odd first food. We aren’t accustomed to feeding meat early. But traditionally meat was a very typical first food – organ meats especially so! A quick and easy way to feed liver is to purchase grassfed beef liver powder. (Mix it with a little breastmilk or water, or add a tad to more watery foods.)
Egg Yolk
Egg whites can be allergenic. However, egg yolks are usually not. Egg yolks cooked soft, or hard cooked and mashed with a little bit of breastmilk or goat milk, can be an easy option for baby.
Bananas
Bananas aren’t high in protein or in fact; however their sugars are fairly simple and easily digestible – and they contain their own amylase to aid the body in digestion. Bananas are also readily accessible and easy to mash for baby or easy for baby to eat by hand.
