It’s tricky to offer a list of “gifts for kids,” because a precise list of recommendations depends on who, exactly, we’re talking about. Preschoolers, elementary-aged kids, or teens? Girls or boys? Here I’ll offer a general list of gift ideas for children, though. (Tomorrow we’ll talk about gifts kids can make or buy for others.)
- One Step Ahead has some easy building kits that would make a great gift. (While you’re there, take a look at their other offerings. They sell some great stuff!)
- Look for additions to a ” set” of something they already have – unit blocks
, Littlest Pets
, wooden trains, Legos
, Hot Wheels cars
, etc. (This will, hopefully, keep mom and dad from having to find new storage places for things!)
- Contribute to a hobby. Does the recipient build model trains, collect baseball cards, or crochet? (If the child doesn’t have a hobby yet, you could give a “getting started” kit.) See the crafty gift list for more ideas.
- Clothes. Most young boys may find clothing boring, but most girls (and the older boys/some of the younger ones) will appreciate new additions to their wardrobes. Especially if these are not just basics – add something a little “fun” here if you can.
- Consumable school and art supplies are a favorite gift here, because they get used up rather than taking up lots of “new” space – and we would otherwise have to buy them.
- Books, of course, are also one of my favorite options. 🙂 (Read more in a couple weeks as we talk about books as gifts.)

This week we’ll be giving away Crochet for Children.
