Maybe this is one of those “duh” things that everyone else has already thought of, but it took me a while to think of it, so maybe someone else could still use the “aha!” 🙂
We have a number of wooden puzzles, so we have a puzzle rack. (A couple of the newer puzzles are, unfortunately, a tiny fraction of an inch too wide for our rack, so they’re just piled on top.) As the rack is on a fairly high shelf (so the kids can’t just grab them and scatter pieces everywhere!), I can’t see them. I was constantly taking out three or four puzzles to find the one my daughter asked for.
It finally occurred to me to label the sides of the puzzles, so I can see which one is which without having to take them out of the rack. Like this:
Nothing fancy here; I just pulled out my trusty Sharpies and wrote directly on the wood. (You could certainly use a labeler
, though, if you’re so inclined.) The labels aren’t even centered or anything, but they’re functional.
