In conservative Christian circles, an issue that periodically resurfaces is that of daughters and higher education. Now, if you’ve been reading here for a while, then you already know that I don’t believe that a college degree “just in case” is really necessary. That’s like sending one’s son to school to study law “just in case” his primary goal of becoming a doctor doesn’t work out. However, some families do believe that their daughters need to have this fallback degree – and some desire their daughters to have bachelors’ degrees for the purpose of complying with homeschooling laws in their state. Whatever the reason, I like the idea of an online university for the education of daughters, because this allows them to remain at home under their daddies’ protection.
There are a number of online schools out there (perhaps I will do a post about this after the new year), offering a variety of majors/emphases and a variety of features. One I have just recently learned about is Western Governors University. What makes WGU different from most other universities, particularly the other online ones, is that it is a non-profit. This, of course, has a positive impact on tuition costs! However, unlike most other non-profit schools, WGU is fully accredited. (I have not been able to determine whether WGU grants credit by examination, but that is an option one should definitely look into, no matter what your college plans, as it has the potential to save you considerable time and, depending on circumstances, some money, too.)
Whether your daughter is interested in taking just a few courses, or getting a complete online nursing degree – or an online degree in education, business, etc. – an online university like Western Governors University could allow her to “have her cake and eat it, too,” where school and family are concerned.
