Over the Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project is such a neat project! Some of Broadway’s entertainers wanted to do something to benefit breast cancer research, and this project is what they settled on – they composed and recorded a bran-new collection of lullabies, and the sales of these items raise funds for Breast Cancer Research Foundation & Young Survival Coalition.
The collection is comprised of 26 songs on 2 CD’s. There’s also an accompanying picture book (17 of the songs are in the book). The musical quality is exactly what you would expect of Broadway artists. I also love that there is a lot of variety (just like in Broadway shows)! It doesn’t sound like 20+ songs set to more-or-less the same music, as can often happen with other lullaby collections. Each song is unique.
The songs are all unique lyrically, as well. It’s definitely a modern collaboration, addressing a wide variety of circumstances that haven’t (to my knowledge) been tackled by previous lullaby writers. One song sounds like a lullaby of a birth mother to a child she’s giving for adoption. One of my favorites talks about the “tiniest onesie in the world” and is clearly a song for a preemie.
One or two are odd choices for children, in my opinion. “It takes bimbos…” for instance, is not my idea of an appropriate lyric for children, even in the context of the world being comprised of all types of people. (Seriously, can you imagine hearing your 3-year-old sing that?) Overall, though, this is a fun, refreshingly unique, and approachable selection. And as I have children whose favorite movies, as preschoolers, were Broadway musicals, these are quite popular around here!
Disclosure: I was provided with the book and CD set referenced above, to facilitate this review. Copies are also being provided for giveaway and for the Baby Shower for Jesus donation. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

This sounds like an interesting CD. I’d been thinking about lullabies lately since the arrival of my newest baby. I even recalled a memory of a tune my grandmother used to hum while rocking me to sleep and she died when I was 3 years old. I want my children to have memories like that. 🙂
I am always looking for new lullabyes! This sounds great and for a wonderful cause too!
