October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month. While this is such a sad “holiday” to observe, it is a wonderful thing to see that our culture is beginning to recognize the significance of these losses. Even if they were yet unborn when they passed from this world, our babies were babies and ought to be remembered.
This was brought home to me quite poignantly last weekend at Relevant. Angie Smith (wife of Todd Smith, of Selah) spoke. I had not heard her story before, but it was very touching. At 18 weeks, routine tests showed that her baby had some medical issues that were “not compatible with life.” This precious baby lived only a couple of hours after birth. During the course of her talk, Angie asked if every mother who had lost a child would please stand up. Fully half of the room was standing.
Mothers, if you have lost a wee one, you are not alone. Our stories are all different. Some are harder than others. But the life of a child is the life of a child.
If you would find it comforting, you can read Angie’s story in her book or on her blog. Please feel free to leave other resources in the comments, as well.
