Frequently, the most frugal option is found by not thinking conventionally. For instance, if you’re going somewhere for an extended stay, hotels may not be your least expensive option; you may be better off with a short-term rental, a timeshare, or even house-swapping.
Likewise, bulk buying options may not save you as much as you think. We joined Sam’s Club last year when we needed tires, as the difference in the cost of the tires would about cover the membership for the year. I just got the renewal paperwork in the mail, and was surprised to find they had estimated my annual savings based on the categories of products I’d purchased.
According to them, I should expect to save about $44.29 a year. The annual cost of membership is $40. So, really, I would save about $4.29 a year. That is not really worth all of the hassle of signing up and then making an additional stop every time I’m shopping for the appropriate item categories! Of course, many people will save with a club membership, but don’t assume; do your research first.
Yep. Sam’s doesn’t do much for me either. Though my mil has a membership and she picks up the huge bags of garlic and Ghiradhelli chocolate chips for me whenever she goes.
