My daughters love Angelina Ballerina. Unfortunately, I don’t. Although the lessons in it are generally positive, there is far too much whining and such in the “before” portion of the story – and my children will pick that up well before they pick up on the lessons.
For these reasons, I was excited when I discovered the Gigi DVD’s. Put out by Tommy Nelson (the children’s division of Thomas Nelson, publisher of the NKJV, among other things), these DVD’s are only one part of an entire line of products centered around the character of “Gigi, God’s Little Princess.” I believe the line started with a series of books by Sheila Walsh (‘though I haven’t read any of the books yet), and expanded from there.
Like Angelina Ballerina, these are videos/stories with immense “little girl” appeal. Unlike Angelina Ballerina, they are soundly Scripture-based and teach not only good character, but also godly living. Gigi is not perfect. If she were, she would not be believable or relatable as a character! But she is, overall, a positive example. She’s a good friend, respects her mom and dad, thinks of others before herself, etc.
I also like that the stories (two per video) are fairly short, so I can let the girls watch one and not have them in front of the television for ages.
If my children are going to be sitting watching movies – especially the ones that they pick out – I would be happy for these to be the ones they’re watching, because they encourage them to grow in godliness.
Disclosure: We received a couple of Gigi videos at no charge for review purposes. All views expressed in this post, however, are fully my own.
