The Bible shows us (at least) two different responses to calamity. Take a look:
All the people will know – Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria – who say in pride and arrogance of heart: “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the sycamores are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.” For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them, nor do they seek the LORD of hosts. Therefore the LORD will cut off head and tail from Israel, palm branch and bulrush in one day.” (Is. 9:9-10, 13-14, emphasis added)
Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass, when the Lord has not commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that woe and well-being proceed? Why should a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the LORD; let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven. We have transgressed and rebelled; You have not pardoned. (Lam. 3:37-42, emphasis added)
How do we respond to calamity?
With self-sufficient action, as the former group of people? Or with humility, repentance, and worship, as the latter group? How do you respond?
I pray that I am like the latter group, and like Job:
“Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” (Job 2:10b)
“Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.’ In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.” (Job 1:20-22)
How about you?
