Along Came You

All of us us mamas know that our lives are forever changed since the birth of our children.  This sweet book allows us to share those changes with our children in a playful way.

The picture book contains a series of “Before you….After you….” comparisons that highlight the joys (and, occasionally, hidden frustrations) of life with young ones.  Pairings like “before you, I liked to watch the rain.  After you, I like to dance in the rain,” and “Before you, I read books with a thousand pages.  After you, I read your favorite book a thousand times,” tell our children how they have made our lives different.  Every page does this with a positive tone, though – even in areas where we sometimes have hidden frustrations.  (“Why can’t I just sit and read a book for five minutes?!”)  This makes it good for us, too, reminding us of the blessings!

The illustrations are colorful and fun, and add to the story.  (When you read that “before you, I liked to dress up.  After you, I like to dress up,” it really loses something without the illustrations!)

Rooted in the fact that children are a gift from the Lord, Along Came You does an excellent job of pointing out that while things are very different now that there is a child around, this is a blessing.  This is one of those books (like Love You Forever) that chokes me up every time I read it.

This is a new favorite!
