“Blow the trumpet, sound the horn. Daddy’s princess has been born!” So begins the journey of a girl from birth to motherhood.
I got to review an advance copy of Always Daddy’s Princess, and the verdict is: this is one of those books that I can’t actually read to my children – because I get too choked up!
The text is written in a playful rhyming style, and takes the reader through a series of major milestones: birthdays, ball games, braces, learning to drive, college. Conservative readers may balk at some of the content (boys, prom…) but we just viewed them as examples of age progression. The book is a beautiful expression of a daddy’s lifelong love for his daughter and the idea that even when she’s all grown up, she’s always his “baby girl.”
The full-page illustrations are done in a mildly quirky style reminiscent of Gru in Despicable Me. They’re colorful and fanciful, perfectly supporting the idea of “princess.” Each section of text is accompanied by a relevant Scripture verse.
This is a beautiful book, and I’m glad we have it. But our girls will have to read it to themselves because Mama can’t read it out loud!
