Bathtime with tiny babies can be a challenge. Traditional baby bathtubs can often be rather awkward. And I don’t know about your babies, but mine tend to freak out at being laid largely on their backs in the water. They seem sure that I will drop them underneath and they will drown. The folks from Blooming Bath were gracious enough to send me their version of a baby bath in time to use it for Caleb’s first bath. (His first bath would have been a few days earlier, but I was struggling to get his little handprints for a “memory” project I’ve done with all the kids, and wanted to be able to wash him after we got the green ink all over his hands!)
The Blooming Bath is not a standalone tub; rather, it’s designed to go inside a large sink (or, I imagine, you could use it inside a traditional baby tub). The flower-shaped bath is made of foam (so it dries quickly), covered with a soft fabric. (It comes in four different colors – hot pink, bright turquoise, bright yellow, and this neutral cream.) So the first thing I did was plug the kitchen sink and place the Blooming Bath inside. Then I filled the sink, making use of our Bath Ball to filter out the icky chlorine and such in our city water.
Filled, the sink looked something like this:
The Blooming Bath fits pretty snugly in our kitchen sink, and I was surprised to find that it actually held the majority of the water inside the bath. I had figured the water level would be about the same from the inside to the outside.
Clearly, Caleb found it pretty cozy.
He wasn’t so sure about the actual washing! (He didn’t totally hate it, though.)
All clean, and it’s time to get out of the “tub” and dry off.
What he did really hate was waiting around to get clothes on afterward, when he really wanted to be eating!
The Blooming Bath definitely seemed to be a comfortable place for Caleb to get a bath. And it held him cozily enough that I didn’t have trouble keeping him from slipping and sliding. (The fabric means that the bath itself is not slippery, unlike the typical plastic baby tubs or even a bare sink.) It fit so snugly in our sink that, if anything, I had a little trouble getting at him to bathe him. I don’t think it would fit well in a typical bathroom sink. (That may not be the case. It may be that bathroom sinks are shallow enough that the petals just don’t “cup” as much.) It would not be too small to work well in a utility sink, though.
It was a little difficult for me to squeeze the excess water out of the Blooming Bath when I was done. My hands aren’t very big! But it didn’t drip as I took it back to the bathroom to dry, so I was apparently able to get enough of the water out.
I like it. I particularly like that it’s cushiony and soft, making bathtime comfortable and pleasant for the baby.
