I just read Lisa Whelchel’s Creative Correction, and found it very edifying and helpful. Unlike many child training books, which leave me feeling like I must be the only parent on the planet who doesn’t just naturally do everything right, I found this one very approachable. I also found it helpful to see a variety of ideas for a variety of child training issues. (Right now, for instance, our biggest difficulty with one of ours is her acting “too big for her breeches” – or, to put it another way, arrogant/self-important.) Since what works best for one child doesn’t always work well for another, it’s nice to see a variety of suggestions so I can, hopefully, zero in on one that is a good fit for the issue and child in question. Many of the ideas are designed to “make the punishment fit the crime,” which is good for those of us who don’t think well on our feet.
