Fire Prophet is the second book in the Son of Angels series by Jerel Law. In these books, the Nephilim are half-human, half-angel; their children are “quarterlings.” In Fire Prophet, the fallen angels are out to destroy all of the Nephilim and their children, and the quarterlings will have to call on their angel powers to help in the battle to defeat them.
I have not read the first book in the series, but I had no difficulty following this one. Any references to earlier points in the story are well-commented so you know what you’ve missed. I found the story quite enjoyable, compelling, and well-written. However, I would not hand it off to my preteen and let her read it.
One major purpose of these books is to illustrate the actual spiritual warfare that’s going on all around us, making it real for our children. This does that, but it uses a good deal of literary license to do so, and I don’t believe most preteens will be able to readily sort out the fact from the fiction in that area. Some of these are not elements I find to be a big issue – like the fact that angels or part-angels have special “powers,” almost like superheroes – but others, in my opinion, take away essential things from the gospel (like that the helmet of salvation is a particular power some angels might have). I would read this with my children, so we can talk about what comes from Scripture and what is drawn from the author’s imagination. It’s worth the read, though.
