I was provided by FunBites with the cutter shown below, to facilitate my review. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
I have to admit that I am not (at all!) creative when it comes to food. So if food is going to be “fun” (and usually it’s not – usually edible and reasonably healthy suffices for us), someone else is going to have to do the work. The creative work, I mean. That’s why I like tools like FunBites. Kids like their food cut, and they like food in fun designs. FunBites makes that easy. (Well, for a creative numskull like me, maybe just doable, but that’s still saying something!)
Isn’t the new packaging for these cool? Each cutter is available in two colors, and each different color is a different “character.” This packaging makes it fun even just to open your FunBites. But it’s ultimately not about the packaging; it’s about the contents!
There are three different cutters. One is just squares. I’ve reviewed that one in the past, and you may see it sneaking into some of the photos. One is a variety of triangles. (That’s the one shown here.) And one is hearts (which are comprised of triangles and half-circles.) One of the things I love about these is that they’re versatile. You can just use the cutter and then reassemble the food in basically the same configuration it started in. Or you can arrange and rearrange the cut pieces to form designs. This is the part where I’m pretty inept, so I think the new placemats are pretty cool because they picture lots of ideas!
(See, this is about as good as I get. Those were supposed to be butterflies.) Usually my kids use the cutters, and they’re much more creative than I am! These are that easy and safe, though. The cutters are designed with a bit of a “rocker” shape, so you can kind of rock them back and forth as you press down. They’re all plastic – no metal blades – so they’re pretty safe for the kids, but that means that softer (and, sometimes, thinner) foods work best. I tried a chunk of apple and it worked but it was really difficult. And big slabs of cheese can be tricky. But sandwiches are usually fine. Cheese (not in huge chunks), lunch meat, melon, etc. are all good.
The square one is good for cutting bite-sized “sticks” out of chunks of melon (melon being a bit softer than, say, an apple!). You can also use it to intersperse several different kinds/colors of fruit (or bread, for that matter).
