If you’re considering electronics for Christmas gifts this year, take a good look at the GoBible. The GoBible is like a cross between an mp3 player and an audio Bible.
Available in KJV, NIV, or NKJV, it contains every verse of the Bible. The unit is smaller than an index card (‘though, obviously, thicker), and very lightweight. What makes this truly unique is that, unlike most audio Bibles, it is broken down to the verse level, not just the chapter level, so you can go straight to exactly the spot where you want to begin reading.
You can also add a “bookmark,” so you can begin reading where you left off. This is especially good for non-readers (or weak readers) or those who don’t see well to use for their quiet times, although anyone can benefit from it.
The packaging was easy to open – always a plus. (The battery took me several minutes to unwrap, though, oddly enough.) Although I know that reading instructions is a good thing, I intentionally tried to use this out-of-the-box, without reading the instructions, so I could see how simple or complicated it was. For the most part, I found it very intuitive and easy to use. There was one menu section where I had trouble determining how to “enter”; otherwise, I could figure out anything I needed to, without the directions.
You can navigate the GoBible by testament, by your bookmarks, by reading plan, or through the story index. As you can see, that’s a lot of options! The menu plays aloud at each level, so no reading is necessary to find what you’re looking for. The Voyager edition has extra storage space, so you can even download music and/or audiobooks to your unit. The battery is rechargeable; the unit recharges via USB cable (included) with or without an AC adapter (also included). It comes charged, though, so you can use it right out of the box.
Several optional accessories make this even more versatile. There are, for instance, speakers, which will allow the family to listen together. This could be very handy to play the Bible as “quiet time” for babies or very young children you might not be comfortable putting earbuds in/headphones on. You can also get an adapter to enable the unit to play through your car radio, for travel.
This is highly recommended as a gift, or as a tool for parents of non-readers.
