I’m really good at doing things last-minute. I didn’t mean for this to be quite so last-minute, but a new supplement and I had a run-in and I wasn’t feeling so good the day I would have been doing these. So ideally there should be tassels on these graduation cards, but…there aren’t. Oh, well.
Graduation Cap (with Cut File)
I wanted a simple paper-pieced graduation cap: one piece for the cap and one for the mortarboard. I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I made it myself. (Thank you to Michelle for the tutorial about converting SVG files; without it this would still not be done, and I would be fuming and plotting to pitch the computer out the window.) You’ll find the graduation cap cut file at the end of this post if you want to use it yourself.
Now, I didn’t do anything fancy with these. I bought brown kraft paper for wrapping our gifts in, so I wanted a similar look with the cards. For the cap, I cut the pieces on the Silhouette (I made the full cut file 4.155 inches wide, in case you want to know what size I used) and then used pop dots to connect the top to the bottom so it had some dimension.
If I’d had a little more time, I would have used a small brad (paper fastener) through the top and made a little tassel out of embroidery floss.
The Card
The card is pretty simple. There’s just a “ribbon” across at around the 2/5 mark (2/5 up from the bottom of the card) and then the cap. This “ribbon” is actually a strip I cut out of a piece of corn husk! It’s the first thing I happened across in my craft area when I was looking for something in the right color family.
And here you can see everything together:
For those of you who would like to use it, here’s the cut file:
